A fiery horn section adds a forceful punch to some of the traditional tunes laid down by this accomplished trio of stylists, but an attention to the genre’s historic fundamentals leaves Heritage Blues Orchestra with few contemporary peers. Making an audible road map of the genre's regional variations, the group rambles between the country-inflected shuffle of Texas Hill country (“Chilly Jordan”), New Orleans second-line grooves (“C-Line Woman”), and electrified riffs emblematic of Chicago (“Catfish Blues”). Somehow, Heritage Blues Orchestra does it all with soul-soaked aplomb.
