John Michael Montgomery

John Michael Montgomery

In the first half of the ’90s, John Michael Montgomery was the biggest thing out of Nashville this side of Garth Brooks, and his third album makes that success easy to understand. On one hand, he had the vocal chops to bring a burnished glow to ballads like “I Can Love You Like That,” blurring the borders between country and adult-contemporary pop. On the other, he could rip out hard-twanging barn burners (the country-rocker “Cowboy Love” and tongue-twister “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)”) like nobody’s business.
