Sunny Sweeney - EP

A move from Austin to Nashville gave Sunny Sweeney more time to work with some of Music City’s best songwriting collaborators, but as the first tune on her eponymous 2011 EP reveals, she’s still more honky-tonk than most. “Drink Myself Single” is such an authentic roadhouse rocker, you can almost hear bottles clinking and boot heels scuffling in the background as her brassy drawl croons over fiddles, pedal steel and some of the best Telecaster picking since Redd Volkaert joined Merle Haggard. “Amy” works all those rootsy tones into a gripping narrative about infidelity sung from the point of view of the other woman — it’s almost as if you get to hear Jolene’s side of things from the old Dolly Parton staple. Sweeney flirts with twangy radio pop on “Staying’s Worse Than Leaving,” an infectiously catchy slice of Americana trimmed with heartbreaking lyrics updated from those bygone tear-in-beer tunes. Sweeney’s sass fits perfectly with the tough love lyrics of “Helluva Heart” while “From a Table Away” is a soaring hit waiting in the wings for its moment to shine.
