While I understand that choreographers as a rule don't own the music---was told to check if the music had been used by another choreographer, especially in the last few years.

If it was within 4-5 years AND a popular dance--I would not use it.
See that has changed

I don't see a problem with writing a dance to which the music may have been used.... Oftentimes there are different artists, different remixes or arrangements...
Once the dance is choreographed it may be for absolute beginner,, improver, intermediate or advanced... I have written several that were brand new out, and the next week or so someone else has done it, complete with video... Dancers will choose the one they like best and that's how it should be...it's like choosing a balloon or a cupcake,,, some just appeal for one reason or another...

As stated--I tried never to use a song (esp. by the same artist if: 1) the dance was popular and/or 2) it's less than 4-5 years old.
If I wanted to use the song, I would write the other choreographer & inform them of my intention (always tried to write a different level)----if he or she seemed not happy, I'd drop the song.
Once, I did not receive an answer. After 3-4 weeks of waiting---used the song.

Yes, now there are 20-30 dances to a popular song. Example: a gentleman & I were the 1st to choreograph "Shape Of You" (within 12 hours)----then the dances came almost every week. Think there are over 30 now. That's a different scenario.
